A Level Arabic – Pearson Edexcel
Almanar Arabic School offers an advanced pathway for students who wish to progress beyond GCSE and develop a high level of competence in Arabic. Our A Level Arabic programme is designed around the Pearson Edexcel A Level Arabic specification, providing students with opportunities to develop sophisticated language skills alongside a deeper understanding of Arabic culture, society, literature, and contemporary issues.
The programme places particular emphasis on advanced reading, writing, translation, critical thinking, grammatical accuracy, and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in Arabic. Pearson Edexcel describes the qualification as encouraging advanced research and reading skills while recognising the importance of Arabic language and culture.
Advanced Language Development
At the advanced stage, students work with increasingly complex texts and topics and develop the ability to:
- Understand and analyse a wide range of authentic and adapted Arabic texts.
- Communicate ideas, opinions, arguments, and experiences with increasing accuracy, fluency, and sophistication.
- Produce well-structured and coherent extended written responses, using an increasingly broad range of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and linguistic conventions.
- Apply grammatical knowledge accurately in extended writing and translation.
- Develop effective Arabic-to-English and English-to-Arabic translation skills.
- Research, discuss, and critically evaluate contemporary social, cultural, educational, environmental, and technological issues.
- Develop a deeper understanding of the cultures, societies, and perspectives of the Arabic-speaking world.
Year 12 / AS-Level Foundation
Although the reformed Pearson Edexcel A Level Arabic qualification is assessed as a linear A Level, the first year of study can provide a strong foundation in the core thematic areas and skills required for advanced study.
Students develop their language through themes including:
- Youth Matters – family relationships and friendships, peer pressure, role models, music, fashion, technology, and communication.
- Lifestyle, Health and Fitness – food and diet, sport and exercise, health issues, and different lifestyles.
- Environment and Travel – tourism, travel and transport, natural disasters, weather, climate change, energy, pollution, and recycling.
- Education and Employment – education systems, school life, volunteering, internships, employment, careers, and unemployment.
These themes provide students with a broad vocabulary base and enable them to develop the ability to discuss and write about relevant issues from a range of perspectives.
By the end of this stage, students are expected to be able to produce extended, coherent written responses, applying appropriate grammar and vocabulary, and to demonstrate strong comprehension and translation skills.
Advanced A Level Study
As students progress through the full A Level programme, their studies become increasingly analytical and sophisticated. In addition to developing their linguistic competence, students explore Arabic literature and cultural perspectives, enabling them to engage critically with literary works and wider social and cultural themes.
The programme develops students’ ability to:
- Analyse literary texts and identify themes, characters, ideas, techniques, and cultural contexts.
- Express and justify personal opinions using evidence from texts and wider knowledge.
- Translate accurately between Arabic and English, preserving meaning, tone, and context.
- Write extended analytical and discursive responses using sophisticated vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- Discuss complex contemporary issues and present reasoned arguments in Arabic.
- Demonstrate a high level of independence in reading, research, analysis, and written communication.
Literature and Cultural Study
Literary study forms an important part of advanced Arabic education, allowing students to move beyond language learning and develop a deeper appreciation of Arabic literature and culture.
Where the prescribed Edexcel literary texts are selected for the students’ examination route, students undertake detailed study and analysis of works such as The Thief and the Dogs by Naguib Mahfouz and The Lamp of Umm Hashim (Kandil Umm Hashim) by Yahya Haqqi. Through these works, students explore literary themes, characterisation, social and cultural contexts, narrative techniques, and the historical and intellectual ideas reflected in Arabic literature.
Preparing Students for Future Study
The A Level programme aims to prepare students not only for successful examination performance, but also for further study, higher education, professional opportunities, and confident engagement with the Arabic-speaking world.
By completing the programme, students are encouraged to become independent, articulate, and culturally aware users of Arabic, capable of reading sophisticated texts, communicating complex ideas, conducting research, analysing literature, and translating accurately between Arabic and English.
